Accurate Testing Solutions

During the development of TrackTex it was quickly established that to demonstrate the effectiveness of experimental products under live loadings would be difficult with existing laboratory facilities. Finding sites to use for live trials and the complexity of setting up and monitoring such experiments meant impractical timescales.

Support from the Department of Trade and industry along with a consortium of rail maintenance contractors, industry suppliers and academics allowed the construction of a full scale test rig to simulate the harshest conditions a geosynthetics in railroad ballast would experience.

The rig is large enough to accommodate subgrade, ballast and ties and uses hydraulic ram actuators which could simulate the dynamic load of different types of train and model different trafficking frequencies. The rig also allowed simulation of high water table, poor drainage and varying levels of rainfall.


Ensuring Quality Through Rigorous Lab Testing

Over a decade of research was conducted to develop TrackTex. Using the testing rig allowed comparison to real world data in a repeatable, controlled environment. In 2010 TrackTex received Network Rail product acceptance and has since been used on sites across the UK, USA, Europe and Australia with more than 10 million square feet installed.

GEOfabrics has an on-site UKAS accredited testing laboratory (Facility no 1773) which performs testing according to relevant standards for various product development and quality control requirements. UKAS accreditation demonstrates the competence, impartiality and performance capability of our laboratory.
